Most Spanish names today are patronymic and locational in Origin.  The surname Sanabria means “one who came from Sanabria,” a region in Spain.  Many names were also given in association with a person's trade; Seda for a person that worked with silk, Tirado for a person that was a good marksman, etc.  Before names became hereditary, a father’s name was generally used as a surname.  These were distinguished by the endings –es and –ez, such as Rodriguez and Ramirez, which mean “son of” Rodrigo and Ramiro.  A recent custom has been to use the father’s surname in conjunction with the mother’s.  The father’s name comes first and is joined to the mother’s by “y” or by a hyphen.  In many countries the "y" and the hyphen are no longer used.
